According to the standards:
The melt flow rate meter is suitable for the determination of the mass flow rate of thermoplastic melts specified in the national standard GB/T3682.1-2018 Determination of melt flow rate and melt volume flow rate of thermoplastics. It adopts the ISO 1133 regulations and meets the ASTM D1238 test standard. It complies with JB/T5456 "Melt Conditioner of Melt Flow Rate Meter" and JJG 878 - "Melt Flow Rate Meter" standard specification.


GB/T3682-The measurement of the mass flow rate for thermoplastic.

The basic element of the melt indexer is to meet the accuracy requirements and test methods specified in the international standards. The standards include those common in ISO 1133, GB/T3682, JIS K 7210, ASTM D1238 and PVC tests of ASTM D3364, plus provisions in specific standards.

Determination of melt index according to Method A; melt mass flow rate (MFR)
In this method, the extrudate is cut in a specified time and the mass of the cut extrudate is weighed on an analytical balance. The test result is the mass of extrusion per unit time, in g/10 min. The quality of the resulting MFR results is related to the cutting time and the accuracy of the stated mass. If the MFR index is low and a longer cutting time is required, we recommend using manual cutting.

Determination of melt index according to Method B; melt volume flow rate (MVR)
This method requires a melt indexer/extrusion plastometer equipped with a piston displacement sensor. The MVR results are obtained by measuring the volume of the extruded material per unit time in cm3/10 min. Calculated from the displacement of the piston in a certain period of time. The significant advantage of this method is the elimination of mechanical cutting. It has the features of simultaneous recording of piston displacement and test time while achieving high accuracy, even for short measurement times and small piston displacements. Depending on the material, accuracy requirements and MVR results, the same bucket can test up to 40 separate measurements. 

Determination of melt index according to Method C
A drum with a height of 8.00 mm and a nozzle with a diameter of 2.095 mm are commonly used. The MFR value measurement is better than the recommended 75 g/10 min in the standard, and the size of a "half height/half caliber" drum is 4.00/1.050 mm. This is specifically designed for ASTM D1238 Method C.

For many polyolefins, different force values are typically used to measure the MVR and flow rate ratio (FRR). When using a simple melt indexer, multiple fillers need to be tested.
